Austin Film Festival 2019 Recap & Rankings
As always, the Austin Film Festival was a great time, and as always, it was a bit of a crapshoot, but that’s how festivals are. From beautifully poetic analyses of faith and culture to ham-fisted, condescending thrillers, I saw some of my favorite and least favorite films of the year. Here’s how they stack up.
Tier 1: Cream of the Crop
1. A Hidden Life
2. The Obituary of Tunde Johnson
Tier 2: Interesting Innovate Indies
3. I’ve Got Issues
4. Limbo
Tier 3: Solid, Engaging Films
5. Just Mercy
6. The VICE Guide to Bigfoot
7. Motherless Brooklyn
8. Atlantics
Tier 4: Decent Films With Some Problems
9. Drowning
10. Red Rover
11. Ford v Ferrari
12. DC Noir
13. Paradise Without People
Tier 5: Can’t Recommend
14. Rattlesnake
15. Cows With No Name
Tier 6: Absolute Dog Shit
16. Peace
17. Apartment 413
A Hidden Life takes the top spot for me. Its spellbinding imagery and score set it apart as one of the year’s most unique films. It opens in theaters December 13th. The Obituary of Tunde Johnson, I’ve Got Issues, and Limbo were all great as well. None of them have distribution yet, but keep an eye out for them.
This was fun. See y’all next year.
Michael Dixon is covering the Austin Film Festival because he has a crippling movie addiction, and he’d like to share it with you. See the rest of his festival coverage at the links below.
Editor’s note: Movie addiction is highly contagious. Symptoms include watching 17 movies in a week while working a full-time job, blogging about those movies, and relentlessly guilting your friends into reading your dumb blog as they become progressively annoyed and gradually stop speaking to you. If you or a loved one is experiencing any of these symptoms, please consult a therapist immediately.
